Boosting Social Media Following by 860% through Design Content for National Bail Fund

Sana Ali

Believers Bail Out is a national bail fund program founded in 2018 for incarcerated Muslims in pre-trial and immigrant detention in America. They campaign for bail reform and lead community-building projects. In September of 2019, I joined the team to work on building the organization's digital presence up as a lead design & social media coordinator.

My responsibilities included creating graphics, videos, a new logo with related iconography/animations, & social media/site management. I used Squarespace, Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere Pro, & After Effects.

Main idea

problem

Believers Bail Out's online presence & branding identity was in its early stages of development.

Founded in 2018, Believers Bail Out was a new organization that needed to establish a strong digital media presence and social media following to share the good work they were doing with the community!

Solution

A strategic posting schedule of effective graphics & a new logo to build recognition.

A consistent posting schedule of meaningful content built a significant digital following within just a few months of implementation. The new logo developed a foundation for the organization's brand identity.

Effective Messaging

I edited educational & promotional video content. The video here is a recap of the 2020 Ramadan Campaign, which required synthesizing over 15 hours of footage into 3 minutes.

Strategy & Process

Graphics, Videos & Campaign blast Materials

The goals of the visual design work were to:

  1. educate the target audience on the bail system
  2. bring awareness to BBO's efforts
  3. advertise call to actions (volunteering, campaigning, protesting, donating, etc.)
  4. build community engagement

I developed the following general visual design strategy to align with these goals.

1

Use heavy, sans serif typography to bring attention and keep messaging simple and bold, especially with call-to-actions.

2

Use bright & varied color schemes to keep the instagram page visually exciting for users to scroll through and educational content engaging.

3

For heavier content (quotes, statistics), divide text into digestible sections & create visualizations to increase readability & comprehension.

Logo Design

I collaborated with the National Directors to design the organization's logo. The process began with research:

  1. interviews with key organization stakeholders to asses the organization and messaging goals
  2. a competitive analysis of the branding of other bail funds to get a sense of where BBO's logo needed to differentiate

The main takeaway from the research was that the logo needed to tie together BBO's bail fund operation & Islamic identity.

Early Logo Ideas

Early Logo Ideas

The process continued with ideation, design, and evaluation:

  1. 50+ sketches of basic logo ideas
  2. presentations to the National Directors with voting to determine top designs
  3. digital creation of designs in Adobe Illustrator
  4. 3 more rounds of presentations to narrow down on colors, typography, & details
  5. creation of companion animations using Adobe After Effects
